Our tale of the thumri begins with a confession. Our nayika confesses to having stolen her lover’s ‘dhyaan’. Are the spoils of her crime just his stolen image? Or does she confess to the even greater crime of having stolen his concentration, of having disrupted his saadhana? Penned and originally composed by Pt. Amarnath as a classical composition, this bandish has been re-interpreted here as a bandish ki thumri. This exploration of the thumri has been attempted in the ek-taal (as opposed to the traditional teen-taal in which bandish ki thumris have always been sung). Its lyrics digress from the traditional saas-nanad-sautan stories – an offshoot of the kotha culture - and search for a deeper, more poetic statement.
