The next chapter in our story is a traditional banarasi thumri where our twelve year old nayika is in a bit of a predicament. Her saas and her nanad make her do chores and taunt her while her naughty beloved secretly eyes her every move. How can she possibly go and fetch water from the Jamuna? This thumri in the raga pancham-se-gaaraa throws up a vivid picture of our innocent nayika’s situation. The lilting rhythm of the six-beat dadra and its launches into the eight-beat laggi depict the thumri as a form of music that hasn’t yet entered our larger, more spacious classical taal system.
